Description of new Muricidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda) collected during the ATIMO VATAE expedition to Madagascar "Deep South" ArchiMer
Houart, Roland; Heros, Virginie.
The extreme south of Madagascar is noted for the endemism of its marine biota, notably molluscs. Six new species of Muricidae Rafinesque, 1815 are described in the present paper; three in the subfamily Muricinae Rafinesque, 1815: Chicoreus (Triplex) kantori n. sp., Naquetia manwaii n. sp. and Dermomurex (Dermomurex) charlesi n. sp.; two in the subfamily Muricopsinae Radwin & D'Attilio, 1971: Favartia (Favartia) tantelyi n. sp. and Favartia (Pygmaepterys) fournierae n. sp.; and one in the subfamily Rapaninae Gray, 1853: Semiricinula bozzettii n. sp. Similar species from Madagascar and from other regions are compared and illustrated. The radula of Naquetia manwaii n. sp. and of Semiricinula bozzettii n. sp. are illustrated.

Locomotion of Stramonita haemastoma (Linnaeus) (Gastropoda, Muricidae) on a mixed shore of rocks and sand Zoologia
Papp,Marcos G.; Duarte,Luiz F.L..
Mixed shores of rocks and sand are appropriate systems for the study of limitations that the isolation of rocks may impose for gastropods that typically inhabit rocky shores. We marked 52 Stramonita haemastoma (Linnaeus, 1767) snails on a mixed shore and found that 34 of them moved between rocks one to four times during 15 surveys in a period of 72 days. In the experiments, the snails moved on rock by continuous, direct, ditaxic, alternate undulations of the foot sole but on submerged sand they used slower arrhythmic discontinuous contractions of the foot sole. They switched between modes of locomotion in response to the type and topography of the substrate and possibly to water dynamics. In nature, snails moved between rocks forming aggregations where...

Prey selection of corallivorous muricids at Koh Tao (Gulf of Thailand) four years after a major coral bleaching event Naturalis
Moerland, M.S.; Scott, C.M.; Hoeksema, B.W..
Corallivorous Drupella (Muricidae) snails at Koh Tao are reported to have extended their range of prey species following a major coral bleaching event in 2010. Populations of their preferred Acropora prey had locally diminished in both size and abundance, and the snails had introduced free-living mushroom corals in their diet. Although the coral community largely recovered, the Drupella population grew and reached outbreak proportions. For this study, corallivorous muricids at Koh Tao were studied more intensively to examine their identities, distribution and prey choice four years after the bleaching event. Drupella rugosa was identified as the major outbreak species and occurred at densities > 3 m-2 in depth ranges of 2-5 and 5-8 m. The density of D....

Results of the Rumphius Biohistorical Expedition to Ambon (1990) : Part 5. Mollusca, Gastropoda, Muricidae Naturalis
Houart, R..
This report deals with the species of Muricidae collected during the Rumphius Biohistorical Expedition on Ambon. At 44 stations, a total of 58 species in 23 genera of the prosobranch gastropod family Muricidae were obtained. The identity and the classification of several nominal taxa is revised. Four species are new to science and are described here: Pygmaepterys cracentis spec. nov. (Muricopsinae), Pascula ambonensis spec. nov. (Ergalataxinae), Thais hadrolineae spec. nov. and Morula rumphiusi spec. nov. (Rapaninae). Some comments are included on the Muricidae described by Rumphius and on their identification. In his "Amboinsche Rariteitkamer" (1705) 21 species of muricids were included, of which 16 were illustrated by Rumphius or Schijnvoet. The identity...
